Home Energy Savings … CFL’s

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

Most of my Santa Clarita Valley clients are looking of ways to save money on their electric bills.  One simple and best way is to upgrade to Compact Florescent Bulbs or CFL’s.

EnergyStar Packaged CFL

I know you think they flicker and they are harsh cold light…not so..  These newer 3rd generation lights are warm and inviting light that start quicker than those bulbs made in the 80’s.    You need to look for 2700 K on the bulb or box this is the bulbs Kalvin rating.  This rating is the bulbs color rating,  the lower the number the warmer the light.  Example:  Regular Bulbs (energy hogs) have a rating around 2500K  (warm white),   Office Fluorescents run around 3500-4000K (cool and bright).   High Kelvin bulbs are fine for the garage or laundry room.   In a living room or bedroom you want to search out a bulb that has a 2700 to 2750K rating.  This will replace that warm light your use to.    Lets talk about lowering your energy bills for Santa Clarita.  Everyone wants to save money and Lighting makes up 37% of your electric bill.   CFL use 1/4th of the electric it take to power the old style bulbs.   CFL’s create less heat than a old style bulb.  Don’t wait until the old style bulb burns out.  CFL’s will pay for themselves in six Months of energy Savings, and every six months you’ll receive 100% return on your investment.

CFL's Now Come in a wide variety that look just like regular bulbs.

CFL

CFL’s now come in recessed configuration, so they look just like the old energy wasting type.   CFL’s now come in dimmable and 3 way types as well.   Don’t wait, some homes will see a $100 to $200 dollar savings each year.

The mercury in CFL’s is very small, actuall it would take sever bulbs worth to cover the tip of a ball point pen.  So when it goes bad, please recycle these bulbs.  The except them at the annual round up that Santa Clarita Hosts each year.

One last point….if your going to leave a room for more than 19 minutes , Edison says turn that CFL off, but if your coming back in in say 5 to 10 minutes leave the CFL on.    This is the break even point for the energy it takes to start the bulb.  Look for the ENERGYSTAR logo on the bulb.  We are an Proud ENERGYSTAR Partner.  Bulbs with the EnergyStar logo will save you more money than those without.
